Spring Hay Fever

Spring is here and so is Hay fever season! Hay fever, known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergy related inflammation of the nasal passages, eye membrane (conjunctiva) and throat. These symptoms occur due to your sensitivity to these airborne allergens. 





Common Allergens: 

  • Pollens – trees, grasses and weeds 

  • Dust Mites –in bedding, upholstery and carpets 

  • Pet Dander 

  • Indoor and Outdoor Fungi and Molds 


Symptoms: 

  • Runny nose and congestion 

  • Itchy, red and watery eyes 

  • Sneezing 

  • Cough 

  • Itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat

The Difference between Hay Fever and a Common Cold: 

  • Hay fever begins immediately after exposure to allergens where as a common cold begins 1 –3 days after exposure if your immune system is susceptible. 

  • Hay fever symptoms last as long as you’re exposed to allergens, around several weeks usually and common cold symptoms usually lasts 3-7 days.  

  • Hay fever symptoms include a runny nose with thin, watery discharge and does not cause a fever where as a Common cold includes a runny nose with thicker discharge, usually with a color like yellow, body aches and low-grade fever.
