Top Remedies for Flu

Updated: Sep 23

It seems the flu comes earlier every year now! So what can you do to prepare?

First, we need to know the symptoms.

Influenza is a contagious viral illness, and the symptoms will usually come on suddenly.

Symptoms include:

  • fever usually between 101-104, and usually breaks in four or five days

  • chills

  • weakness, muscle or body aches

  • a cough

  • sore throat

  • runny or stuffy nose

  • headache

  • loss of appetite

In more severe cases, some people experience vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms tend to be more common in children than in adults.

Examples of possible complications from the flu include:

  • pneumonia

  • bronchitis

  • sinus infections

  • ear infections

If you treat with the correct homeopathic remedy during the early stages your body should be supported enough not to develop these complications. If the fever or cough continues beyond 4-5 days you may be moving into the new remedy picture, Pneumonia.

Over the counter medications can suppress the virus. Try to use natural remedies first before turning to over the counter to avoid this suppression. Elderberry syrup, and zinc are good supplements to have on hand and use during the cold and flu season. If you feel the sickness is starting to turn into an infection you may consider adding colloidal silver. I always keep the maintenance dosage on hand, and you can adjust the dosage as needed. Also, do not hesitate to see your doctor as needed.

If you get stuck with which remedies are best for you or if you've tried a few and are not having success, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for an acute consultation. It's best to get these acute symptoms under control before they turn into bigger or even become chronic symptoms.

Prevention of Flu:

During a flu epidemic most people present with similar symptoms. The remedy that matches the symptoms most people are getting will also be the best preventive.

Here are some general flu remedies that can be used for prevention:

Influenzinum (200c): Once a week may help prevent the flu during the season. 30c can be used if 200c is not available. 30c would need to be used more frequently.

Arsenicum album: When most people getting the flu feel weak, anxious, chilly, thirsty for small sips, and are worse at night and when alone. They may have burning pains relieved by hot drinks.

Gelsemium: When most people getting the flu look drowsy or intoxicated, with drooping eyelids and flushed faces. Limbs feel heavy. Want to be left alone. Chills run up and down their backs. No thirst during the fever. Pain in the eyeballs or in the back of the head. Slow pulse.

Acute Dosage Recommendations:

· Take one dose of the indicated remedy at 15 minute intervals for 3-4 doses or until symptoms improve. If no improvement after 3-4 doses move on to the next indicated remedy.

* Some people can have an aggravation from this frequently dosing. It is best to take a dose and listen to your body. If you feel any improvements at all you know you're on the right track and take the remedy again when your body tells you it needs it. Some people find it difficult to listen to their body in that case you may have to try the 15 min dosing just be aware it can create some aggravations in some individuals.

· Your indicated remedy should match 3 or more of your symptoms. You do not have to have every symptom listed.

· If symptoms persist seek a qualified practitioner. If you get stuck and it seems the indicated homeopathic remedies you’ve tried are not working, reach out to me for an acute consultation: Acute Consultation

Other Holistic Remedies for Flu:

-Elderberry - “Sambucol was shown to be effective in vitro against 10 strains of influenza virus. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study, Sambucol reduced the duration of flu symptoms to 3-4 days (1).”

More studies and information regarding how great Elderberry is for the flu can be found here

-Zinc may reduce symptoms of cold and flu. Zinc is an essential trace nutrient in humans that plays a role in the immune system. A deficiency in Zinc may lead to a wide variety of illnesses.
